TONKIN ZULAIKHA GREER

As an icon of ‘new Brutalism’, the strength and purity of Building 1 is respected, but its shortcomings are offset with a new human scale and a genuine ‘breath of fresh air’. Simple direct forms, created out of self-finished durable materials form the basis of the scheme, ensuring a high level of compatibility between new and old. The geometrical basis of the old is extended in plan, but enlivened in elevation by a sense of weightlessness and uplift.

DESIGN INC

Our proposal for UTS is to extend Broadway into the campus. In the new internal streetscapes we link interactive spaces that support the full spectrum of teaching and learning experiences- delivering, applying, creating, communicating and decision making. We know that successful design integrates people, process, building and environment. Our methodology appreciates concepts of flexibility, growth and innovation that offer spatial choices, social flexibility and virtual links..

JOHNSON PILTON WALKER

The design concept is inspired by a vision for the City Campus that is vibrant, connected, identifiable and welcoming. It transforms constraints into opportunities, aligning the physical form of the place with UTS’ vision as a dynamic interface between education, commerce and culture and an integral part of our city.

The location of the entrance capitalises on the legibility of the Building 1 Tower in the broader context of the city. By partially removing the existing podium structure, the Tower is grounded to create an entry to the Campus.

HAMES SHARLEY

'Tensegrity' UTS is designed to hang in space, a system of discontinuous steel compression struts held motionless in mid-air by continuous steel threads. The structure relies on tension for its integrity; much like the muscles, sinews and soft tissue of the human body hold the skeleton in place to support the body, or the stays of a sailing boat secure the mast and harness the power of the wind. 'Tensegrity' also provides a metaphor for the multilayered matrices, networks, connections and linkages that are the University. The integrity, strength, power and resilience of the whole comprised of a myriad of interconnected, nodes, pathways and elements working in perfect balance and efficiency.
